Station Update

Well there isn't much to update other than another new governess has been employed for this year and a small amount of rain, 18mm, was also received which was enough to wet the ground but not make water run. Also there is many a poddy calf being fed including one that was fostered onto a goat and now thinks it is a goat not a bull. There are plans in place for a renovated kitchen in the main house and plans for new cattle yards as well. There have been fires lit on neighbouring stations by lightning from storms that hold no rain, well except for the very nice one with the 18mm that put it's own fires out. There have been takes of lightning striking the same places repeatedly, five times, seven times, in the one storm. There is hope for the very wet February that has been predicted. Cattle are being fed and cattle are being watered (sounds like a garden, well I guess much the same as you have to take water to them) and the two families are taking it in turns to have some time away to refresh.

This morning there was a very good segment on the drought by Sunrise. I thought it was tasteful, factual and caring. They urged people to help out farmers and station owners through donations. Here is the video.

Enjoy your weekend!

More current photos are thanks to the boss lady.

  2. we certainly live in a land of contrasts. I find it amazing that summer's for you mean heat and rain - while over here in the south west corn is just hot!
Terrible fires and high temperatures happening all over Australia. Must be horrendous to loose your home in a fire.
Have a wonderful week, and thank you for stopping by my blog this week.

  3. It's so very dry in so many places at the moment. We are just trying to get through each day as it comes, keep animals alive and as healthy as possible, and just survive ourselves. I hope you're right about big February rain.

  4. Hoping they get some good rain soon. Feb 2012 looked nice and green, that would be nice wouldn't it.

  5. Hi Trudy, with what is it now? 65% of the state in drought there are a lot of people waiting on that rain. Thanks for looking in.

  6. Hi Jill, yes this is a land of contrasts. I grew up further south in QLD and it doesn't have a wet season like the north of Aus and summer often meant heat and evening storms. The fires and heat everywhere are a bit hard to take and I think it would be devastating to loose everything in a fire. My theory is though (possibly wrong) that the high temperatures are mostly normal, well except way down south, it is just that a lot of areas have had some pretty mild summers in recent years. I remember it being hotter as a child than it has been in recent years but maybe that is just a child's perspective.

  7. Hi Mandy, I can't imagine how hard it is at the moment just keeping things going and staying alive. I hope that February prediction is spot on for your sake and for many others. Just know you are thought of and I hope all those thoughts and wishes help to carry you through.

  8. Hi Alicia, Feb 2012 was very wet with water everywhere, it was also the last good rain on the station. It would be nice to know it was looking like that again.
