A Sunday Drive on a Thursday

This afternoon I did a Sunday drive after work. Sunday drive on a Thursday, that works doesn't it. Anyway I went for a drive to see what I could see.
I headed up towards Copperlode Dam. There is a great lookout over the city along that road.

As you can see the city is a little soggy looking at the moment. We are spending more times with clouds than with sun and a lot of time with water coming from those clouds. It must be wet season. They are predicting up to 800mm of rain falling from Friday to Tuesday around the Far North so I guess it is going to get soggier. I like the rain and as a bonus it means the weather is cooler. My students aren't that impressed though.

Also near this lookout is a nice and handy waterfall that only runs after a big rain. Last weekend covered the big rain aspect and the continuing rain since has kept it flowing down the mountain.

I mucked around a bit taking photos, different angles, different settings.

After I had decided I'd risked my standing on the edge and middle of a pretty skinny road enough I decided to go check out the dam.

It was a pretty slow trip. That road is a hairy one.

Copperlode Dam holds the Cairns water supply. I've heard people talk about how they think that they'd build another one to give a bigger water supply so wasn't sure of its size. Pretty big it seems although Cairns is a growing city.

I want to head back up that skinny, windy, sharp cornered, rainforest shrouded road again some other day to really check out the dam. When it isn't pouring down and nearly 6pm when they close the gates. It was more that it was nearly 6pm, I am all for walks in the rain.

Back down the mountain and it wasn't anywhere near as wet, just drizzly.

A few more waterfall snaps as it seemed to have grown in strength and it really was time to head the rest of the way down the mountain and back home.

It really is super close to my house so I'll have to head back more often I think. I've got some exploring to do. I'm so glad I've visited another new place, even if it has taken a while.

I have seen this waterfall before, after Cyclone Ita last year so I knew it would be running.

Now I'm off to bed to let the rain lull me to sleep.

  1. These shots are all just stunning, but I am particularly impressed by the scale of the sky. Very humbling.~May@AchievingClarity

    1. Thank you. I hadn't thought about the size of the sky but you are right, it is huge. Maybe that is something I take for granted and maybe that is why I need these little trips away from the houses.

  2. how nice to take a Sunday drive midweek! I loved your scenic shots, but I especially enjoyed your waterfalls. It looks like you have had lots of fun playing with the settings. Some of the shots have really got that water blur happening - fantastic. It is something I need to practice and play with too, but we don't have waterfalls anywhere near us!
Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for stopping by my blog this week.

    1. It was nice and good use of a free afternoon. I did have fun playing around but I need to learn more about it I think, and take a tripod. You'll have to come over and borrowmy waterfalls and i'll go borrow your wildflowers, big skies and wide land. I hope you are having a good week.

  3. I like going on rides to....on any day of the week. I have been known to say I am running to the store for milk and come back hours later with photos, and no milk. I wish I had a photography buddy on some of these outing. My husband is a good sport, but it is not his hobby, but mine. And I wish I could drive somewhere close to see waterfalls. Your photos turned out very nice.

    1. I've been known to get sidetracked too. I enjoy taking photos by myself, it is my time out, but maybe doing it with others would help me learn. Thank you.
